About this course
This course addresses the martial applications of the postures of the 37-form, in the lineage of Huang Sheng Shyan. It is built for practitioners of any background: the principles apply regardless of the lineage or form a student practices, and the material serves beginners and advanced practitioners alike.
The martial dimension is among the most commonly missing components in Tai Chi practice. Many practitioners know the form thoroughly without knowing the purpose behind its movements. This course bridges that gap, giving each posture its intent, so that the form can be practiced with understanding rather than by rote.
Richard Huang demonstrates and explains both the internal and external applications of the postures, working through the higher levels of application in detail. The techniques covered include Fa Jin (发劲), explosive issuing of power; Shuai Jiao (摔跤), throwing; Qin Na (擒拿), controlling and locking; Da (打), striking; and Diē Dǎ (跌打), takedowns.
Whether a student practices Tai Chi for health, for meditation, or for martial skill, the martial perspective enriches the whole. It reveals the reasoning beneath the choreography and returns intention to every movement of the form.
